Goal and Mission

My mission is to protect and help all pollinators, leave less of a footprint on this planet while producing products as close to nature intended and promoting better understanding of people through bees.

I want my nieces and nephews to have future that includes living on a healthier planet. No good comes from ruining the earth.  I personally enjoy being in nature and like it when I see all types of bugs, which is a sign of a healthy ecosystem.  We need all sorts of bugs and pollinators on earth.  So, I am doing what I can to get back to simple practices that impact our environment positively. Honey Bees happen to be a very useful tool for success.   No other insect can be directed to pollinate a specific crop! And no other insect in the process creates a delicious food product full of healthy benefits when eaten.

"As Organic as the Government will allow"

I know my bees behavior/health by sound, smell and movement and even rarely need to use a smoker to calm them down. I never introduce chemicals into their home.   I am zen with my bees.

Since honey bees travel in search of flowers for their food supply, we can not promise that all farms, gardens and lawns in the area are chemical free.  As a matter of fact urban centers are known for overusing pesticides so that the nitrate level is 40 to 60% stronger than is needed to the kill weeds for that manicured lawn.

Despite the behavior of other people,  Bee Mindful has averaged only 20 percent colony deaths per year.  Given that the industry average is as high as 45.5% and we have been raising our bees in Iowa, which is considered a chemical death zone.  We look forward to our results in Rhode Island as we expand our business to New England.

OUR BEST PRACTICES

Cross Breeding our Bees

Cross Breeding our Bees

Cross Breeding our Bees

  •  Years of practice and experience have given me the knowledge to breed our way around the need to use chemicals in the hives.
  • By cross and line breeding our own stock, I have created a bee more resistant to varroa mites, diseases and can withstand the colder temperatures.

Naturalize our lands

Cross Breeding our Bees

Cross Breeding our Bees

  • We have been naturalizing our  property/environment by creating areas of natural grasses, wild flowers, etc.
  • The result is more interesting to the eye and gives us more time to do other things instead of mowing.
  • And most importantly it provides more food for the pollinator.

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

Cross Breeding our Bees

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

  • Our honey jars are always glass.
  • Glass preserves the quality and flavor of raw honey.  Raw honey can crystalize and to return it to liquid  requires the jar be heated.  Heating  plastic can introduce chemicals into your honey.
  • Come see us to REFILL your jar.
  • Please recycle.

Composting

Friends and Family

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

  • We "make" our own dirt by combining our non-meat food scrapes, coffee grinds and egg shells with our abundant supply of leaves and weeds.  With a little help from the rain and oxygen we produce soil rich in nutrients.
  • Our soil is loaded with worms that create tunnels for water and nutrients to reach the roots of our plants and flowers. More efficient than even organic fertilizer.
  • We turned our barren gravel yard into a lush land now bursting with plants, bees, butterflies and birds.

Land Restoration

Friends and Family

Friends and Family

  • Improving the ecosystem through mine reclamation and prairie restoration is a top priority for us.
  •  In  Iowa we work with Greene County and Carroll County Conservation and the White Rock Conservancy.
  • In Rhode Island we have partnered with the Westerly Land Trust.
  • We are currently rehabilitating former farm land for our honey comb production.  This includes planting lots of native plants for all our the friendly pollinators to come feast on.
